Letter From the Editor: Needs vs. Wants 01/24/2010
We received an email from a videographer who was not happy that we categorized video as “nice to have” in our post, “Do we need a videographer?” He felt that video was more than just a “nice to have” and that it should be a priority for all couples. This got us thinking about weddings and how it’s easy to lose sight of what is a need versus a want or a “nice to have”; especially since we’re taught from a very young age that a wedding is supposed to look a certain way. But, the simple truth is the only things you actually need to get married are: your significant other, a marriage license, an officiant and a witness. Videography, photography, floral arrangements, cake, favors, etc. are all luxuries, and they are all things that are, “really nice to have” but not actually needed in order to get married. And while a lot of couples may want the award winning photographer, or the designer gown or the three-tiered cake, the reality is, they have a budget. And with budgets come restrictions. It’s up to the couple, not the wedding industry or us, to prioritize all of those elements. Our goal is to show our readers as many options as possible and to explain the benefits of the services that are available, so that they can make an informed decision when it comes to prioritizing what’s important to them and their wedding.
